Interview tips

(1) Preparation for an interview

  • Make sure you know about the job you are applying for, the company, its location, the date and time of your interview and who you have to see.
  • Dress appropriately – clean and tidy top to toe, e.g. Suit or jacket and tie for men, suit or skirt and jacket for women.
  • Have your certificates/qualifications and relevant documents in a folder along with 2 copies of your CV (one for the interviewer, one for yourself to refer to during your interview. People become nervous and forget what they have stated on paper.
  • Prepare a list of questions you may have, keep them short and to the point.
  • Do role plays with a friend a few times to rehearse your answers.
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes early to visit the toilet and relax.

(2) At or during the interview

  • Greet the interviewer with good eye contact, a smile and confident handshake.
  • Wait until you are asked to sit down.
  • Listen carefully to questions, stay focused and give yourself time to think before answering.
  • If you did not understand a question, feel confident to ask the Interviewer to repeat it. (Note: you should not be asked any embarrassing or personal questions at an interview - you are entitled to decline to answer).
  • Do not give any unnecessary information, speak negatively or waffle on.
  • At the end of the interview, ask when you will know the outcome, thank the Interviewer with a firm but comfortable handshake and smile.

(3) After the interview

  • If you are told to make contact, do make sure that you do so at the agreed time.
  • If you are invited for a second interview, be honest about your interest in the job; you may have changed your mind, found another job, etc.
  • If you are not available to work notify the company when you will be so that you can be held on file for future vacancies.
